IMVU Triggers Explained: How They Work on Mobile, PC and the Web
What IMVU triggers are, how to use them in chat, what 'actions' and 'any skin' mean on a listing, which devices they work on, and how to fix a trigger that does nothing.
On IMVU, a trigger is a word you type in chat that makes an item you are wearing do something: play an animation, change a pose, swap a texture. Official catalog items use triggers for dances and gestures. On the Black Market, triggers are mostly adult body add-ons with dozens or even more than a hundred actions, each started by its own word.
This guide explains how triggers work, how to read a trigger listing before you buy, and what to check when a trigger does not respond.
How triggers work
Every trigger item comes with a list of keywords. When you are wearing the item and you send one of those keywords as a chat message, IMVU plays the matching action on your avatar, and everyone in the room sees it.
A few things are useful to know:
- The keyword is the message. You type it in the normal chat box and press send.
- Spelling matters. The word has to match exactly what the item expects.
- Some items need another item. Many adult triggers are designed to work with a specific body or skin. The listing will say so if that applies.
- Others in the room need to see it. What they see depends on the device they use, which is why compatibility labels matter (more on that below).
How to read a trigger listing
Trigger listings use a shorthand that confuses a lot of first-time buyers. Here is what to look for:
| On the listing | What it means |
|---|---|
| Number of actions (e.g. 65, 120) | How many different actions the trigger set includes. More actions means more variety. |
| Male / Female | Which avatar body the item is built for. Some come in both versions. |
| Any skin | The item adapts to your avatar’s skin tone. Without it, the item comes in one color. |
| Mobile and PC | The platforms the trigger is made for. Check this against the device you and your partner use. |
| Permanent | Positioned as a long-lasting version. Ask what guarantee comes with it before paying. |
| Bundle | Trigger sold together with a room or a second trigger, usually cheaper than separately. |
If a listing does not tell you the platforms, the number of actions or whether it needs a specific body, ask the seller before you buy. A good shop answers in minutes.
Mobile, PC and web: does it matter?
Yes. IMVU now runs on phones, on the desktop app and in the browser, and IMVU has been moving desktop players from the old IMVU Classic client to its newer app. Not every item behaves the same on every version. For triggers, two things matter:
- Your device, because you need to wear and fire the trigger.
- Your partner’s device, because they need to see it.
That is why we label every trigger and room in our shop by platform, and why it is worth confirming what your partner uses before buying.
Trigger not working? Check these in order
- Are you wearing it? Open your outfit and make sure the item is on, not just in your inventory.
- Is the keyword exact? Copy it from the list that came with the item to rule out typos.
- Is another item using the same keyword? Two worn items with overlapping triggers can block each other. Take off other trigger items and try again.
- Do you have the required body or skin? If the listing says it needs one, it will not work without it.
- Is your device supported? Try the same keyword on the other platform if the listing says it supports both.
- Can your partner see it? If it works for you but not for them, the problem is their device or client.

How to choose your first trigger
If you are buying for the first time:
- Start with the device check. Make sure both of you are covered.
- Prefer “any skin” unless the color you want matches your avatar exactly.
- Do not chase the highest number of actions. A well-made set with 60 actions is better than a glitchy one with 120.
- Look at bundles if you also need a room. A room plus a trigger often costs less than each one on its own.
- Add a warranty if the price is high. It protects your purchase if the item is ever removed. We explain why in our guide on ban risk.
And whatever you buy, keep it private. Triggers are made for private rooms with people who chose to be there.

A trigger is a keyword that fires an action on an item you are wearing. Before buying, check the number of actions, the body type, “any skin” and, above all, platform support for both you and your partner. If a trigger does nothing, work through the checklist above before contacting the seller. New to all this? Start with what the IMVU Black Market is.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use a trigger on IMVU?
Wear the item, then type its trigger word in the chat box and send it like a normal message. The action plays on your avatar. The list of trigger words comes with the item.
Do triggers work on IMVU mobile?
Many do, but not all. Check the listing before you buy. Our listings say whether a trigger works on mobile, PC or both.
Why does my trigger do nothing?
The most common causes are not wearing the item, a typo in the trigger word, another worn item using the same trigger, or a device the item does not support. See the troubleshooting list in this guide.
What does 'any skin' mean on a trigger listing?
It means the item adapts to your avatar's skin tone. Items without it come in one color and may not match every skin.
